Super Furry Animals – Rings Around The World M/NM

Released in 2001, the Super Furry Animals’ album Rings Around The World marked a turning point for the Welsh band. It was their first for a major label, Epic Records, and debuted at number 3 in the UK Albums Chart. This ambitious project was seen by frontman Gruff Rhys as a potential “blockbuster” album, influenced by classic rock giants like The Eagles. However, the band’s signature eclecticism remained. Rings Around The World throws genres like pop, prog, punk, and even electronica into a vibrant mix, resulting in a sound that’s both catchy and adventurous.

The title track itself, “(Drawing) Rings Around the World,” exemplifies this approach. Described by Rhys as exploring “rings of communication around the world” and “pollution,” the song blends glam rock influences with a modern alternative rock sound. The album was a critical success, shortlisted for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize, while the single “Juxtapozed with U” became a recognizable hit.
