Tool – Lateralus
$84.95 Inc. GST
Released in 2001, Tool’s Lateralus marked a turning point. It built on the complex soundscapes of their previous work, Aenima, but ventured further into the realm of progressive and art rock. The album is not simply a collection of songs, but a cohesive journey, with instrumental pieces woven between tracks to create a sense of flow.
Lateralus is a demanding listen. Songs sprawl past the five-minute mark, defying traditional song structure with intricate time signatures and dynamic shifts. Guitarist Adam Jones’ riffs are hypnotic and heavy, while drummer Danny Carey’s polyrhythms are a marvel of precision. Maynard James Keenan’s vocals are both powerful and nuanced, weaving cryptic lyrics that delve into themes of spirituality, psychology, and the human condition.
The album is not without its lighter moments. “Mantra,” a brief interlude featuring the sound of a purring cat, offers a moment of respite amidst the sonic intensity. Yet, even this playful detour serves a purpose, reminding the listener not to get bogged down in overthinking.
Lateralus is an album that rewards repeated listens. With each pass, new details emerge, and the listener’s understanding of the music deepens. It’s a challenging but ultimately rewarding experience, a testament to Tool’s ambition and artistic vision.
