Thriller is the sixth studio album by the American singer and songwriter Michael Jackson, released on November 29, 1982 by Epic Records. It is one of the most successful and influential albums of all time, as it revolutionized the music video genre, broke racial barriers, and set new standards for pop music. The album was produced by Quincy Jones, who collaborated with Jackson on his previous album Off the Wall. Jackson wanted to create an album where “every song was a killer” and explored a variety of genres, such as pop, post-disco, rock, funk, and R&B. The album features nine tracks, seven of which were co-written by Jackson. The album includes some of his most iconic songs, such as “Billie Jean”, “Beat It”, “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’”, and “Thriller”. The album also features a duet with Paul McCartney on “The Girl Is Mine”, the first single released from the album.

Thriller was a huge commercial success, reaching number one on the US Billboard 200 chart and staying there for a record 37 weeks. It also topped the charts in many other countries and became the best-selling album of all time, with over 66 million copies sold worldwide. Thriller received critical acclaim and won eight Grammy Awards in 1984, including Album of the Year.

Thriller also spawned seven singles, all of which reached the top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, setting a record for the most top 10 singles from an album. The singles were accompanied by groundbreaking music videos that showcased Jackson’s innovative dance moves and storytelling skills. The most famous of these videos is the 14-minute short film for “Thriller”, directed by John Landis, which is widely regarded as the greatest music video of all time. The video features Jackson transforming into a werewolf and a zombie, and dancing with a horde of undead creatures. The video was a cultural phenomenon that boosted the sales of the album and popularized the concept of music videos as an art form.
