High and Mighty is Uriah Heep’s ninth studio album, released in May 1976, and it marks a major turning point in the band’s history. It was the final album to feature both bassist John Wetton and founding vocalist David Byron, whose struggles with alcohol and growing tensions within the band led to his dismissal later that year.
Musically, the album sits at the crossroads between the band’s earlier, more theatrical hard‑rock sound and the streamlined, melodic direction they would pursue afterward. It’s a record full of contrasts: soaring vocal harmonies, introspective ballads, bursts of progressive rock ambition, and moments of classic Heep heaviness.
