Metallica – S&M

Metallica’s S&M (1999)—short for Symphony & Metallica—is a thunderous collision of classical grandeur and metal ferocity, a live double album that reimagines the band’s catalog through the sweeping power of orchestral arrangement. Recorded over two nights at the Berkeley Community Theatre with the San Francisco Symphony, conducted by Michael Kamen, the project was both a tribute to late bassist Cliff Burton’s love of classical music and a bold artistic experiment.

The album spans Metallica’s career from Ride the Lightning to Reload, with symphonic reinterpretations of tracks like “Master of Puppets,” “One,” and “Enter Sandman.” But it also introduces two new songs—“No Leaf Clover” and “–Human”—written specifically for this collaboration, showcasing how seamlessly Metallica’s songwriting could adapt to orchestral textures.

Kamen’s arrangements don’t soften Metallica’s edge; they amplify it. Strings and brass don’t dilute the aggression—they heighten the drama, adding cinematic scope to the band’s already epic sound. “The Call of Ktulu” and “Bleeding Me” become operatic in scale, while “Nothing Else Matters” gains an even deeper emotional resonance.

Critically and commercially, S&M was a triumph. It debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, sold over 2.5 million copies, and earned Metallica a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance for “The Call of Ktulu”. It also marked the final album appearance of bassist Jason Newsted.
